warp and weave

string quartet

2023 | 7’

Premiered by the Carducci String Quartet at the Chiltern Arts Festival

warp and weave is inspired by ideas from the physics of time that focus not on extremes, but on the intermediate scales at which patterns, change, and stability coexist. As philosopher of physics Jenann Ismael writes:

“The warp and the weave of the world, the patterns with their samenesses and differences, the frozen accidents, the temporary stabilities, the different paces of change, the ebbs and the flows, and the things that rise and fall against different phases of ebb and flow make up the familiar texture of our daily world.”

The music echoes this web of interweaving processes, unfolding between motion and stasis, regularity and irregularity, emergence and decay. Musical materials come into focus, overlap, and recede, forming a fabric that is continually reshaped over time.
